Wastewater pre-treatment for a manufacturer of plant-based food products

EnviroChemie to plan and install a wastewater pre-treatment plant to enable a food manufacturer to significantly cut the amount of heavy pollutants it discharges.

EnviroChemie has been commissioned to design and build a wastewater pre-treatment plant for the German production site of a leading global manufacturer of plant-based food products, which was looking to ramp up its production of sandwich spreads. The goal of the new wastewater pre-treatment plant is to cut the polluting load (measured as chemical oxygen demand; COD) of the wastewater generated during production by more than 90%.

The wastewater primarily contains fatty and oily pollutants. During comprehensive lab tests and pilot trials, EnviroChemie investigated the design parameters and the optimal wastewater pre-treatment method. The customer will receive a redundant Flomar flotation system from EnviroChemie, which supports both two-stage and parallel operation – depending on what is required for the production processes.

The wastewater generated during production is first stored in a mixing and buffer tank, where it is mixed for several hours, cooled and the concentration peaks of the key parameters are balanced out. The wastewater’s polluting load is separated in the Flomar flotation system. Before being discharged into the public sewer system, the wastewater’s pH value is neutralised.

The new wastewater pre-treatment plant significantly cuts the amount of heavy pollutants the manufacturer discharges. As a result, even the municipal wastewater treatment plant can lower its energy and resource consumption thanks to the reduced loads.

The new plant technology is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2024.
