Efficient Treatment of Vapour Condensate from Sewage Sludge Drying for Safe and Sustainable Discharge

Thermal drying of municipal sewage sludge generates highly contaminated vapour condensates that require advanced wastewater treatment. The goal is to ensure safe and compliant discharge into the sewer system while reducing nitrogen and carbon loads and maintaining energy-efficient operation. The focus is on sustainability, operational reliability, and preparing for future water reuse requirements.

What we did

EnviroChemie designed and implemented a multi-stage treatment concept for the condensate generated. The system uses an Envochem® COL unit for coagulation and flocculation, followed by ammonia stripping for targeted nitrogen removal. The concept was specifically tailored to the condensate’s load profile and can be flexibly expanded with optional multi-layer filtration for further polishing of the effluent.

Task

The vapour condensate has a significant hydraulic load of up to 240 m³/day. In addition, it contains high COD loads of around 1,440 kg/day and ammonium concentrations of up to 600 kg/day. Discharge into the municipal sewer system requires reliable compliance with strict regulatory limits—even with strongly fluctuating influent loads during continuous operation. At the same time, the solution needed to be cost-effective and scalable for future requirements.

Solution

In the first stage, the Envochem® COL system reliably and efficiently reduces particulate and dissolved organic substances through chemical precipitation and flocculation. The pre-treated wastewater then undergoes ammonia stripping, which specifically removes high nitrogen concentrations and ensures discharge compliance. The modular system design allows for step-by-step expansion and can be flexibly adapted to changing operating conditions or stricter future discharge requirements.

Benefits

The system ensures consistently compliant discharge values while maintaining high operational stability and process reliability. Its energy-optimized design significantly reduces operating costs and delivers an economically viable overall solution. At the same time, the operator benefits from a future-proof infrastructure that reliably meets current regulatory requirements while keeping options open for advanced water recycling in the long term.
