Leica Microsystems reduces operating costs and minimizes effort with resource-efficient wastewater treatment

Leica Microsystems in Wetzlar is a global leader in the manufacture of light microscopes, sample preparation equipment, and related products.

What we did

We have extensive experience in treating grinding wastewater from the optical industry and developed a concept to modernize the existing wastewater treatment system. The wastewater generated during the production of optical glass contains heavy metals, which are reliably removed through precipitation and flocculation processes.

Task

Leica Microsystems required a new wastewater treatment concept to sustainably reduce operating costs while ensuring long-term process reliability.

Solution

Based on laboratory tests conducted in our in-house wastewater laboratory, we developed a sustainable plant and treatment concept. Instead of continuously concentrating wastewater via microfiltration as before, the wastewater is now treated using chemical-physical processes and discharged into the municipal sewer system. Filtration via a belt filter ensures compliance with the regulatory limits defined in Annex 41 of the German Wastewater Ordinance.

Benefits

Split-O-Mat® SOM systems are pre-assembled within the EnviroWater Group and fully tested prior to delivery. This allows for rapid on-site installation and commissioning. The system replacement was completed within one week—without interrupting ongoing production.

During installation, wastewater was temporarily stored in two 4 m³ buffer tanks included in the delivery scope. The volume of waste requiring disposal—and therefore disposal costs—was significantly reduced. The installed solution from EnviroChemie also simplifies and reduces operational effort.

The wastewater treatment process is fully automated and can be easily controlled via an intuitive visualization interface. Optimally adjusted water treatment chemicals from EnviroChemie’s own production are used for operation. EnviroChemie also supported the customer in preparing the necessary approval documentation. For ongoing operations, Leica Microsystems relies on EnviroChemie’s experienced service team.
