High-Purity Water for Green Hydrogen Ensures Stable Electrolysis Processes

High-purity water is a key requirement for the production of green hydrogen. Even trace impurities can impact the efficiency and lifespan of electrolyzers. At a large-scale hydrogen project in Germany, a high-performance ultrapure water treatment system was implemented to ensure consistently high water quality and support sustainable plant operation.

What we did

EnviroChemie designed and delivered the complete ultrapure water treatment system for two 100 MW PEM electrolyzers. The setup includes two coordinated ion exchange systems for producing and polishing high-purity water, as well as, for the first time, an on-site regeneration unit for the mixed-bed ion exchange resins.

Task

The operation of the electrolyzers required consistently high water quality, free from dissolved salts and minerals. Pre-treated water from an upstream external treatment step required further polishing to reliably remove residual contaminants. At the same time, handling large volumes of resin posed significant challenges in terms of availability, process reliability, and cost-effective operation.

Solution

The Envopur® ION process enables precise demineralization and polishing of the water to ultrapure standards. In the stationary mixed-bed filters, remaining ions are efficiently removed. The exhausted resins are separated, regenerated, and directly returned to the process in an on-site regeneration system installed specifically for this purpose. This ensures continuously high water quality.

Benefits

The solution reliably removes even trace impurities, ensuring stable operation of the electrolyzers. On-site regeneration significantly reduces downtime and minimizes logistical effort. At the same time, the system strengthens sustainable hydrogen production, lowers operating costs, and provides a future-proof foundation for the economic use of green hydrogen.
