Production of High-Purity Water for Large-Scale Electrolysis Processes
For a 300 MW electrolyzer for the production of green hydrogen in Spain, EnviroChemie is supplying a prefabricated water treatment plant housed in two EnviModules to produce high-purity water. The project is one of the largest sustainable hydrogen initiatives in Europe. By ensuring a reliable supply of high-purity water to the electrolyzers, EnviroChemie supports the expansion of the European hydrogen economy and reinforces its long-standing expertise in water treatment for electrolysis applications.
High-Purity Water for Efficient Electrolysis
The plant is an integral part of the overall water treatment process, providing the electrolysers with high-purity water that meets the stringent quality requirements of large-scale hydrogen production. Electrolysis requires substantial volumes of highly purified water, as even trace contaminants can reduce efficiency and shorten the operational lifetime of the equipment. Key quality parameters include very low conductivity as well as extremely low concentrations of silica and organic compounds.
Multi-Stage Water Treatment with EDI, UV Oxidation and Ion Exchange
The process combines Envopur® EDI (electrodeionization), a downstream Envochem® UV oxidation system and Envopur® ION (mixed-bed ion exchange).
The Envopur® EDI system continuously removes residual dissolved ions from the pre-treated water. In the subsequent stage, UV oxidation eliminates trace organic compounds before the final ion exchange polishing step delivers the required water quality for the electrolysis process.
Continuous Operation with Consistently High Water Quality
Designed for continuous operation, the system delivers up to 60 m³/h of high-purity water after the final polishing stage. Integrated online monitoring continuously measures key water quality parameters, ensuring reliable operation and consistently high water quality.
