When thousands of litres of milk are processed into yoghurt, cheese, and other dairy products every day, the result is not only high-quality food but also large volumes of industrial wastewater. Addressing this challenge is one of the largest and most ambitious projects EnviroChemie has ever delivered in its company history.

For Algeria’s leading dairy producer, Laiterie Soummam, we designed, built, and successfully commissioned a state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plant. With a treatment capacity of approximately 5,000 m³ of wastewater per day, the facility ranks among the largest projects EnviroChemie has completed to date.

Sustainability Beyond Wastewater Treatment

What makes this project particularly remarkable? The treated water is not simply discharged. Instead, part of it is reused for irrigating the site's landscaped areas, turning wastewater into a valuable resource while significantly reducing the demand for fresh water.

Sustainability also extends to the treatment of sewage sludge. After dewatering, the sludge can be used as agricultural fertiliser, creating a circular approach that links food production with responsible resource management.

Tailor-Made Technology for Demanding Applications

Wastewater from dairy production is among the more challenging industrial waste streams due to its high concentrations of organic matter, fats, and suspended solids. To reliably meet these demands, the plant employs a multi-stage treatment process.

Following mechanical pre-treatment, a high-performance dissolved air flotation (DAF) system removes the majority of fats and suspended solids from the wastewater. This significantly reduces the load on the downstream biological treatment stages and creates optimal conditions for stable and efficient plant operation.

At the heart of the biological treatment process are two Biomar® OBR reactors, which deliver consistently high treatment performance even under fluctuating load conditions. Together, the individual treatment stages ensure reliable compliance with all applicable discharge standards.
