Water Treatment in Mining: Modern Wastewater Treatment Plant for Ellatzite-Med

At the Ellatzite-Med mining complex in Bulgaria, a modern plant for the treatment of mining wastewater was implemented. The aim of the project was to sustainably improve water quality, reduce environmental impacts, and ensure long-term sustainable water management in mining operations. EnviroChemie developed and implemented an innovative chemical-physical water treatment technology that efficiently purifies process water before it is returned to the natural water cycle. The new plant is part of Ellatzite-Med’s environmental strategy and contributes to aligning industrial production with environmental protection.

What did we do?

EnviroChemie supplied a modern, modular, and fully automated water treatment plant for the treatment of industrial wastewater from mining operations.

The plant combines chemical and mechanical water treatment processes to remove suspended solids and stabilize the pH level. This ensures reliable treatment even when water quality fluctuates significantly.

Key performance data of the plant:

  • Treatment capacity of 100 liters per second
  • Expansion possible up to 250 liters per second
  • Fully automated operation
  • Modular design for future expansion
  • Efficient removal of solids and pollutants

Using this technology, process water can be safely treated and subsequently discharged into the environment.

  • Task

    Task

Mining processes generate large volumes of process wastewater, often characterized by high concentrations of suspended solids and fluctuating pH levels.

The main objectives of the project were to:

    • ensure reliable treatment of mining wastewater
    • comply with strict environmental regulations and discharge limits
    • implement a high-performance and flexible water treatment technology
    • optimize the mine’s water management in the long term

The solution had to meet both the industrial requirements of a large mining operation and the ecological needs of the surrounding region.

  • Solution

    Solution

The plant developed by EnviroChemie uses a chemical-physical treatment process with Envochem® COL L in which specialized reagents are applied to precipitate solids and remove pollutants.

The resulting particles are then separated in large-volume separators. This multi-stage treatment process ensures high purification performance for industrial wastewater.

Thanks to the modular plant design, treatment capacity can be expanded when required without interrupting ongoing operations. At the same time, the automated system ensures high operational reliability and efficiency.

  • Benefits

    Benefits

The new wastewater treatment plant sustainably improves the water quality of regional rivers. The treated water is discharged into the Negarshtitsa River, a tributary of the Malak Iskar River, and fully complies with all environmental standards.

The positive environmental impact is already visible:

    • Significant improvement in regional water quality
    • Restoration of natural river ecosystems
    • Stable populations of Balkan trout
    • Protection of wildlife, plants, and habitats

The project demonstrates that modern industrial water treatment technologies can make a decisive contribution to environmental protection, sustainability, and responsible mining.
