BIOLOGICAL TREATMENT OF FOOD INDUSTRY WASTEWATER CONTAINING GREASE
The biological Split-O-Mat® FAT wastewater treatment plants have been designed specially for the treatment of grease containing wastewater from the food industry, e.g., from canteens.
Which introduction thresholds exist for wastewater containing greas

Pursuant to DIN 1825-2 and DIN 4040-100 grease separators must always be used if vegetable or animal originated grease and oil must be retained from the dirty water. This applies to all business and industrial establishments, especially for kitchens.
In many German towns and villages the general threshold of 250 mg/l for lipophilic substances has been tightened. In Frankfurt for example, a threshold of 100 mg/l for lipophilic substances in greasy wastewater from industrial or business establishments applies. Though, this threshold generally can not be respected with conventional separators meeting the requirements of DIN EN 1825 or DIN 4040.
What can be done if the separation capacity of the grease separator is not sufficient?
With conventional grease separators it is generally not possible to respect the wastewater threshold of 100 mg/l for lipophilic substances, even if the separators are cleaned and serviced regularly. This is especially due to the fact that the wastewater sometimes is an emulsion containing non separable oils and greases that can not be eliminated with purely physical grease separators. The advanced Split-O-Mat® FAT biological wastewater treatment plant uses microorganisms with autoregulative capacity to fully decompose those emulsions and thus to respect the threshold values.
How does a biological wastewater treatment plant work?
The canteen wastewater first passes an inlet filter that automatically separates solid matter from the wastewater. The greasy wastewater then is carried to a grease separator where the separable grease is removed. The separable, organic oil and grease are lighter than water and thus remain at the water surface. After that, the precleaned wastewater is conveyed to the biological Split-O-Mat® FAT wastewater treatment plant so that the not separable, emulsified oil and grease can be removed from the wastewater. During biological decomposition, organic contaminants like grease and oil in water are converted into carbon dioxide. At the end of the wastewater treatment process, grease and oil is decomposed to an extent that makes the wastewater stay below the required threshold values. The wastewater may now be introduced into the sewage system without any worries.
The system operation is permanently monitored by a PLC control with touchscreen for process visualisation. Additionally, the system can be monitored remotely via modem and telephone line.
