Resource recovery out of hazardous waste

AVR-Bedrijven, one of Europe’s largest waste disposal companies, is located in the industry park of the Rotterdam port and it treats the waste of two neighboring petrochemical companies.  The production of propylene oxide results in diluted caustic soda, which is contaminated with high levels of organic materials such as molybdenum and traces of heavy metals.  The caustic waste is burned to transform the organic materials into predominantly carbon dioxide and water.  The solution then enters the waste water treatment plant.
EnviroChemie was commissioned to deliver this plant.  EnviroChemie’s experience in the treatment of exhaust gas scrubbing effluents from household and hazardous waste incinerators was a deciding factor for the client.
The plant contains two steps with a hydraulic capacity of 30 m3/h.

The first step consists of the processes:
  • cooling the waste water
  • separation of solids
  • neutralization
  • molybdenum selective ion exchanger

Up to 6’000 kg of sodium molybdenum solution are recovered daily and reused.

The second step consists of the processes:
  • pH-correction
  • heavy metal selective ion exchanger

These processes allow the separation of ions like zinc, copper, nickel and lead.  The concentration of such materials must be less than 0.05 mg/l in order to meet the strict specifications for water to be fed directly back into the environment.  The specially developed plant achieves this standard with a series of three ion exchangers.

Hydraulic capacity: 30 m³/h
Quality of the molybdenum solution:
Molybdenum: > 94 g/l
